According to statistics, age of Estonian women giving birth is higher and higher. Average age of women giving birth for the first time has increased by five years during last ten years. When in 1995 the average age of women preferring to give birth was 20–24 (38,7%), then in 2006, 32,3% of children were born in families, where the average age of mothers at childbirth was 25–29. Currently, main age of women giving birth for the first time is 20–35.

Percentage of age of women at the birth of their first child basing on data of 1995 and 2006

Amount of young woman at childbirth has decreased almost 50% – in 2006, mothers in age group 15–19 gave birth to 1104 children, that forms 7,5% from all births. Dozen of years ago, mothers in that age group gave birth to 1827 children, being accordingly 13,7% from all births. On the other hand, in the age group 30–45 the number of childbirths by over last 12 years has increased even by 15,3% or up to 36,1 %. Today the average age of women at the birth of their next child is 31.

The heaviest babies are born in West-Estonia, particularly in Hiiumaa, Saaremaa and Läänemaa, whereas mothers in Ida-Virumaa get the lightest babies – compared to the newborn children in Hiiumaa the babies born in Ida-Virumaa are 200 grams lighter. Thereat it is to be noted that there are no big differences in babies’ height.

Taking into account that in other questions the changes are rather noticeable, it is surprising that the height of newborn children has remained practically unchangeable since 1973. Altogether 72% of babies were born being 45–53 cm tall.

Last year about 15000 babies were born in Estonia.
